The Experience Your guided journey begins at the Bigodi Eco-Tourism Office, where a community guide introduces you to the sanctuary’s history and its importance in protecting the local ecosystem. The walk takes you along well-maintained boardwalks and forest paths that wind through swamp, woodland, and grassland habitats. As you move quietly through the lush vegetation, listen to the songs of tropical birds and the rustle of primates leaping through the trees. The sanctuary is home to over 200 bird species, including the rare Great Blue Turaco, one of Uganda’s most sought-after sightings. You may also spot up to eight primate species, such as black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and the grey-cheeked mangabey. Your guide will also share stories about local traditions, medicinal plants, and how the community coexists with wildlife. The walk concludes in the nearby village, where you can meet artisans and learn about the Bigodi community conservation model that reinvests tourism income into education and development projects.
